Marketing work gets judged on results, and clients tie real revenue to your deliverables. If you consult for California clients, here is the coverage that protects you when a campaign or a deadline does not go to plan.
Two kinds of claims
Most disputes fall into two buckets. The first is about your work: a client says a campaign underperformed, a deadline slipped and cost them a launch, or a deliverable did not match what was promised. Those are professional liability claims. The second is about the physical world around your work: a client is injured at your studio, or you damage a venue’s property during a shoot. Those are general liability claims. Most marketing consultants need both.
Professional liability (E&O)
E&O covers you when a client claims your work caused a financial loss, even when you did nothing wrong — an underperforming campaign, a missed deadline, approved creative that led to a dispute. Even a claim with no merit is costly to defend, and E&O is built for it. It is increasingly written into client and agency contracts.
General liability
General liability covers third-party injury and property damage — a client hurt at your studio, or gear damaged at a client’s office or an event. Landlords and larger clients often require it too.
For a marketing consultant, the smart setup is usually both: E&O for your deliverables and GL for the physical risks around them. Bundling can lower your total.

Frequently asked questions
Do marketing consultants in California need insurance?
Most do. E&O covers campaign and deliverable disputes, and general liability covers physical risks. Many contracts require E&O.
What is the difference between E&O and general liability for marketers?
E&O covers financial claims about your work, like an underperforming campaign. General liability covers injury or property damage.
Do freelance marketers need professional liability insurance?
If clients rely on your work and results, yes. E&O protects you when a client blames your deliverables for a loss.
